McDonald's ice cream machines are always down for four reasons, and the last one took the US Copyright Office to change.
One, the nightly heat clean. The Taylor machine, built only for McDonald's, heats itself to a hundred fifty one degrees to kill bacteria, it takes about four hours, and if that fails, it won't serve until someone fixes it.
Two, every two weeks, the crew has to take the whole machine apart and sanitize every little part by hand.
Three, a startup called Kytch built a gadget that watched the machine remotely and cut downtime, then McDonald's warned franchisees it could void their warranty and hurt crews. Kytch says that was false and sued for nine hundred million dollars, and it still hasn't gone to trial.
But the one that finally changed is the digital lock on its software, getting past it even for a repair was against US copyright law. Then in October 2024, after iFixit asked, the Copyright Office made that legal for retail food prep equipment, soft serve machines included, though selling the tool to do it is still illegal.
